Madrid is, without a doubt, the capital of Mexican food in Spain. With a Mexican community that keeps growing and a growing fondness among Madrileños for the flavours of Mexico, the city has more than 30 shops where you can find everything from freshly made tortillas to dried chillies, mole paste, chapulines and everything you need to cook real Mexican food. This guide takes you neighbourhood by neighbourhood through the best options.
Centro and Salamanca: the most emblematic shops
Right in the centre of Madrid, 100% México (Medinaceli) is probably the best-known Mexican shop in the capital. Located next to the Plaza de las Cortes, this shop has been a point of reference for Mexicans in Madrid for years. Here you will find a carefully chosen selection of authentic products: ancho, guajillo and chipotle chillies, Valentina, Cholula and Búfalo salsas, Doña María moles, corn tortillas and even Mexican sweets such as De la Rosa marzipans, Pulparindo and Duvalín.
In the Salamanca district, 100% México (Castelló) offers the same quality in a more residential area. If you live around Retiro or Salamanca, this branch is much more convenient and has practically the same range as the one in the centre.
La Tienda Mexicana is another classic of central Madrid. Specialising exclusively in Mexican products, here the selection is deep: Maseca corn flours, banana and corn leaves for tamales, achiote, dried epazote, and an impressive variety of dried chillies you will not find in any conventional supermarket.
Tetuán and Maravillas: the Latin heart of Madrid
If there is one neighbourhood in Madrid where the range of Latin products is endless, it is Tetuán and the area around the Mercado de Maravillas. Here several shops are concentrated which, although not exclusively Mexican, have extensive sections of Mexican products.
Rebeca - Productos Latinos y del País is one of the shops with the most variety in the neighbourhood. In addition to Mexican products, you will find ingredients from across Latin America, which is perfect if you want to experiment with fusion cooking. The prices are competitive and the service is very personal.
Mercado Ñandutí 100% Latino is a complete Latin supermarket with a notable Mexican section. A good place to do the big shop because they have everything: from fresh produce to preserves and frozen goods.
In the Mercado de Maravillas, one of the largest food markets in Europe, you will find several options: Mandalo Market (Maravillas) has a well-stocked stall with fresh tortillas, Oaxaca cheese and products that rotate with the season. Productos Latinos Miguel and Amazonas Productos Latinos complete the market's offering with their own selections. And Latina Store is another essential stop in the same market.
Mandalo Market (Montera) has another central location near Gran Vía, ideal if you are around the shopping area.
Carabanchel, Usera and Latina: unbeatable prices
The southern neighbourhoods of Madrid are where the Latin community is largest, and this is reflected in the number and prices of the shops. Here the competition is fierce and the prices drop considerably.
La Tienda Latina Doris in Carabanchel is known for its good value for money and for stocking products other shops cannot get. Alimentación Latino, also in Carabanchel, is another solid option for everyday shopping.
In Usera, the neighbourhood with the highest concentration of Asian and Latin population in Madrid, Supermercado Guaraní has a Mexican section worth exploring. Tu Tienda Latina and Mercalatino complete the neighbourhood's offering.
Bodega Latina 2 in Puerta Bonita and Caprichos Catrachos in the Latina district are two more options further south worth keeping on your radar.
Embajadores and Lavapiés: multicultural and full of flavour
Supermercado El Huerto in Embajadores is a Latin supermarket with a good Mexican selection. The Lavapiés-Embajadores area is one of the most multicultural neighbourhoods in Madrid, and the food offering reflects that diversity. Take the chance to stroll through the neighbourhood and discover Mexican restaurants while you do your shopping.
Algo Dulce - Tienda Latina in the Mercado de Santa María de la Cabeza is a hidden gem. As well as basic Mexican products, they have Latin sweets and baked goods you will not easily find elsewhere.
Chamberí and Chamartín: options for the north
If you live in the north of Madrid, you do not need to go down to the centre to find Mexican products. Típicos Market in Chamberí has a curated selection of Mexican and Latin products in a charming residential neighbourhood. Frutas Charito in Chamartín is another option for the north, with fresh and Latin produce.
Universidad: close to everything
Supermercado Intertropico is in the Universidad area, very well connected by metro, and has a wide range of products from all over Latin America with a dedicated Mexican section.
Vallecas: a good range in the southeast
Frutas y Productos Latinos del Valle in the Mercado de Vallecas is the reference for residents of southeastern Madrid. Inside the food market, this shop offers fresh and dry Mexican products at market prices.
Specialist and exclusive shops
Beyond the Latin supermarkets, Madrid has shops with unique offerings:
San Miguel Productos Mexicanos is a shop specialising exclusively in Mexico. The selection is exquisite: artisan mezcals, Oaxacan chocolates, authentic black mole, chapulines, sal de gusano and gourmet products you will not find anywhere else in Madrid.
Micuari Artesanía Mexicana is not exactly a food shop, but a Mexican crafts shop, but it deserves a mention because it perfectly complements authentic Mexican cooking: Talavera crockery, volcanic-stone molcajetes, tortilla presses, metates and Mexican decor.
La Reina de las Tortillas is the reference for fresh artisan tortillas in Madrid. Nixtamalised corn tortillas made the same day, in different sizes and colours (yellow, blue, white). If you are only going to buy one Mexican thing in Madrid, make it these tortillas.
Tiendita del Alamillo is another shop with its own character worth getting to know.
Online and around Madrid
TLT Foods offers online sales with delivery in Madrid and across Spain, ideal for when you cannot get to any physical shop.
In the area around Madrid there are also excellent options: Supermercado Latino (General Ricardos) and Supermercado Latino (Camino Viejo de Leganés) cover the southwest.
Tips for buying Mexican products in Madrid
- Go early on Saturdays: the fresh tortillas and newly arrived products fly off the shelves. During the week there is less queueing and more peace to choose.
- Ask about delivery dates: many shops receive imported Mexican products once or twice a month. If you are looking for something specific (fresh hoja santa, squash blossom, huitlacoche), ask when it arrives.
- Compare prices: dried chillies can vary by up to 50% between shops. The shops in Tetuán and Carabanchel are usually cheaper than those in the centre.
- Bring a bag: many small shops charge for the bag or do not have one.
- Try the Spanish brands: some Spanish brands now make acceptable Mexican products (tortillas, nachos, salsas). They do not replace the authentic product, but for everyday use they can do the job.
Madrid is, along with Barcelona, the best city in Spain to cook authentic Mexican food. With this guide you have all the options for finding any ingredient you need. And if you want to know what to do with those ingredients, explore our more than 700 Mexican recipes and get to work.
