London
London has a thriving al-fresco scene, and Mexican restaurants are no exception. The areas worth seeking out:
Soho and Fitzrovia: several taquerías with pavement tables. Ideal for a Sunday lunchtime with a margarita in hand.
Shoreditch and Hackney: an area with generous terraces, especially at weekends. Combine a stroll round the markets with an outdoor Mexican meal.
Brixton: tables in and around the market. A multicultural, relaxed atmosphere. Some taquerías put tables out in good weather.
Tip: from May to September, London's terraces come into their own. Arrive early (before 1pm or 8pm) to get a table without a wait.
Manchester
Northern Quarter: the terraces here are famous. Several Mexican restaurants have tables outside. Perfect for a summer evening with tacos and beer.
Ancoats: squares with informal terraces. Some Mexican restaurants make the most of the open spaces to put out tables.
Spinningfields: options near the water. A relaxed riverside setting that's hard to beat.
Tip: many terraces here run year-round, with outdoor heaters and blankets in the colder months.
Bristol
Stokes Croft: the terrace district. The pedestrianised streets have Mexican restaurants with outdoor tables surrounded by the area's famous street art.
Harbourside: near the water. Seafood tacos and ceviche with a maritime atmosphere. A perfect option for summer afternoons.
Tip: Bristol's relaxed scene makes for some of the most enjoyable terrace dining outside London.
Edinburgh and Glasgow
Edinburgh (Grassmarket): a giant open-air terrace in itself. Restaurants with tables on the square, perfect for spring and autumn evenings.
Glasgow (Finnieston): terraces along this buzzing strip. Some restaurants offer Mexican options with outdoor seating.
Tip: in Scotland, make the most of any sunny spell — the terraces fill up fast when the weather turns.
Other Cities
Brighton: the North Laine and the seafront have Mexican options with terraces. Perfect for combining the beach and tacos.
Leeds: the city centre has terrace options on pedestrianised streets.
Birmingham: the Custard Factory and surrounding areas have a handful of quality options with outdoor seating.
What to Order on a Terrace
Terrace food calls for fresh dishes and cold drinks:
- To start: guacamole + tortilla chips + ceviche. Perfect for nibbling outdoors.
- To eat: tacos (portable, no cutlery needed), tostadas, nopal salad.
- To drink: a frozen margarita (the queen of terraces), hibiscus water over ice, an ice-cold michelada, Mexican beer (if they have it) or a local one.
- To share: a taquiza among friends with several proteins and toppings. It's the perfect format for terraces with groups.
General Tips
- Book ahead: the terraces of popular Mexican restaurants fill up fast at weekends. Reserve if you can.
- Timing: Mexican restaurants often run all-day kitchens (especially for tacos). Take advantage of off-peak times when the terraces are emptier.
- Sun protection: terraces at lunchtime in summer need shade. Look for restaurants with awnings or parasols.
Setting Up Your Own Mexican Terrace at Home
If you can't find a restaurant with a terrace nearby or you'd rather do it at home, setting up a Mexican terrace is easy and fun:
Terrace Food
Choose dishes that work outdoors (that don't go cold quickly or need complicated cutlery):
- Taquiza: the perfect format for a terrace. Everything in the middle, everyone helps themselves. Read our taquiza guide.
- Guacamole + tortilla chips: the universal terrace starter.
- Esquites in little cups: easy to eat standing or sitting.
- Ceviche: fresh and perfect for the warmth.
- Grilled corn: if you have a barbecue, grill corn cobs and serve with mayo, chilli and lime.
Terrace Drinks
- A jug of margaritas: make a big jug and put it on the table with salt-rimmed glasses.
- Buckets of iced beer: beers in a bucket with ice and cut lime. Eye-catching and practical.
- Aguas frescas in a jug: horchata and hibiscus in glass jugs. The colours are lovely and bring a refreshing touch.
- Micheladas: make the base mix in a jug and let everyone add their own beer.
Atmosphere
- Music: cumbia, son cubano, gentle ranchera in the background. A "Fiesta Mexicana" playlist on Spotify.
- Decoration: papel picado bunting (~£10), a colourful tablecloth, candles at dusk. If you have plants, all the better.
- Lighting: festoon lights + candles. At dusk, the combination is magical.
Terrace Season by City
- London: April-October. The best months: May, June and September.
- Manchester: May-September. With heaters, much of the year.
- Bristol: April-October. One of the more agreeable climates for terraces.
- Edinburgh/Glasgow: June-September mainly; make the most of dry spells.
- Brighton/coast: April-October, weather permitting.

What to Order on a Mexican Terrace: A Guide So You Don't Get Lost
In our experience, many people arrive at a Mexican restaurant with a terrace and don't know where to start. The menu can be extensive and the names unfamiliar. Here are our recommendations for making the most of the al-fresco experience:
- To share in a group (4-6 people): order some nachos with guacamole (£8-12), a selection of quesadillas (£10-14) and tacos al pastor if they have them. Total budget: £30-40 for a good spread.
- Ideal terrace drinks: a classic margarita (£8-10), horchata (£3-4), michelada (beer with lime, salsa and chilli, £6-8). In summer, order your drinks with plenty of ice; Mexicans take everything very cold.
- Hearty dishes: burritos (£10-14), enchiladas (£11-15) or a combination plate that includes rice and beans. Many restaurants offer a weekday set lunch for £12-16 with starter, main and a drink.

The Best Mexican Terraces by City
The UK has plenty of fine-weather days to enjoy eating outdoors, and Mexican restaurants know it. In our experience touring Mexican restaurants across the UK, these are the cities where the Mexican terrace scene stands out:
London
The capital concentrates the greatest variety. In Brixton and Shoreditch you'll find informal terraces at accessible prices (set menu £12-15). Some areas have more premium options with great views. In summer, many restaurants put tables out on the street until 11pm.
Manchester
The Northern Quarter and Ancoats are the areas with the most options. The advantage of Manchester is that the terrace season extends from April to October. Look for those with an interior courtyard to escape the street noise. Set lunch £14-18.
Bristol
Stokes Croft has several excellent options. Bristol combines lower prices than London with a relaxed atmosphere that suits terrace dining for much of the year. Mains between £9-13.
Edinburgh and Glasgow
The Mexican scene in Scotland is growing. Restaurants make the most of courtyards and sheltered spots to create unique settings that blend Mexican aesthetics with local architecture. Competitive prices: tacos from £3 each.
Practical Tips for Enjoying the Terrace
Some tips we've learned over time that will make your experience much better:
- Book ahead at weekends: Mexican terraces fill up fast, especially Friday and Saturday nights. Many accept bookings via Instagram or WhatsApp as well as the phone.
- Go early for brunch: several Mexican restaurants offer brunch at weekends (11am-2pm) with chilaquiles, huevos rancheros and café de olla. It's the best time to get a terrace table without a wait.
- Ask about the heat: in the UK, many Mexican restaurants adapt the heat level to local tastes. If you want it authentic, ask for the salsas on the side and ask which is "the one that really packs a punch". They usually have a habanero salsa reserved for the brave.
- Don't skip dessert: churros with Mexican chocolate (with cinnamon and a touch of chilli) or buñuelos are perfect for rounding off a terrace dinner. If they have flan de cajeta, order it without hesitation (£5-7).
- Bring a light jacket: even in summer, terraces can cool down after 10pm. Mexican restaurants rarely have blankets like the Scandinavian-style places.
Find your ideal Mexican terrace by exploring our directory of Mexican restaurants in the UK and filtering by city. Many listings include photos of the terrace and an up-to-date menu.
Trends in Mexican Terraces in 2026
This year we're seeing several interesting trends in Mexican restaurants with terraces:
- Outdoor mezcal bars: more and more restaurants dedicate a corner of the terrace to a mezcal bar with guided tastings (£15-25 per person, including 3-4 artisanal mezcals with orange and worm salt).
- Immersive decoration: papel picado, cacti, Frida Kahlo murals and coloured lights. Restaurants invest in creating "Instagrammable experiences" that draw a young crowd.
- Local ingredients with a Mexican touch: grilled octopus with pasilla-chilli salsa, cured ham in quesadillas, padrón peppers as a side. Clever fusion between Mexican cooking and local produce is a winning formula.
- Themed nights: Taco Tuesdays (2-for-1), margarita Thursdays, Sunday Mexican brunch. These promotions make the experience more accessible and fill the terraces midweek.
