The burrito is the Mexican dish most Britons eat most often, sold from city-centre counters, food trucks and train-station chains from Southampton to Dundee. This page ranks the UK venues that serve them. We took every venue in our directory whose name or listing mentions burritos, kept those with at least fifty Google reviews, and ordered them by average Google rating, with the number of reviews breaking ties. The figures are those our directory held in October 2026. 29 venues qualify, out of 113 in our directory that mention burritos at all; the table shows the top twenty.
This is not a tasting verdict, and it is not a ranking of burritos themselves. It is a crowd measure of the venues that sell them, which mostly reflects how satisfied people were with the burrito they ordered, but also with the service, the wait and the price. A few restaurants with broad menus appear because their listings mention burritos among other dishes; we have kept them in, because they are places where you can order one.

The table is national, and it is striking how little of it is in London. London has more Mexican venues than any other city, but its burrito venues are mostly chain branches without Google figures in our directory, and the ones that are rated face stiff competition from independents in Southampton, Windermere, Canterbury, Newcastle and Leicester. A burrito is a format that travels well: it does not need a specialist market or imported ingredients, and a good one can be made anywhere.

Mexifun
Address: 121 East St, Southampton SO14 3HD
Google rating: 4.9 from 1,032 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): daily closed
Website: mexifun.co.uk
On East Street in Southampton city centre. It leads the national table on a large number of reviews, which makes this the steadiest top score on the page. Its listing describes burritos, tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas in an informal setting.
Bandito Burrito, Windermere, Cumbria (Independent cafe)
Address: 30 Main Rd, Windermere LA23 1DY
Google rating: 4.9 from 810 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Wed closed · Thu 11:00–17:15 · Fri 11:00–19:00 · Sat 11:00–17:15 · Sun closed
Website: banditoburrito.co.uk
On Main Road in Windermere, in the Lake District. A café rather than a restaurant, it matches the leader's rating with a slightly smaller review pool. Its listing mentions vegan dishes alongside the burritos.
Plan Burrito Canterbury
Address: 36 St Margaret's St, Canterbury CT1 2TG
Google rating: 4.9 from 764 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Sat 11:30–23:00 · Sun 11:30–22:00

On St Margaret's Street in Canterbury, close to the cathedral. It is one of the branches of a small burrito group that our directory also lists in Norwich, Loughborough and Leamington Spa, and several of those branches appear further down the table too.
Where the British burrito comes from
The word means little donkey in Spanish, and the dish belongs to northern Mexico, where flour tortillas are as common as corn ones. Burritos are a traditional food of Ciudad Juárez, across the border from El Paso, and there are several folk stories about how they got their name; none is documented history. In northern Mexico a burrito is usually small and thin, and in central and southern Mexico the same idea goes by the name of a wheat-flour taco.
The large, foil-wrapped burrito filled with rice, beans, meat and salsa that most British counters sell is something else: the Mission burrito, which became popular in the 1960s in the Mission District of San Francisco. Two taquerías there, El Faro and La Cumbre, both claim to have sold the first. Its defining features are its size, the rice, a steamed flour tortilla and the foil that holds it together while you eat it by hand. American chains took the format nationwide, and from there it reached the UK.
That history explains why burrito ratings in the UK tell you so little about Mexican regional cooking, and so much about execution. A Mission burrito lives or dies on the balance of its fillings, how well the meat is seasoned and whether the tortilla holds.
How to judge a burrito counter
- The tortilla. It should be steamed or warmed until soft and stretchy, not cracked. Tears in the foil usually mean a dry tortilla.
- The rice-to-filling ratio. Rice is filler. A good burrito tastes of its meat or beans first.
- Salsa choice. More than one fresh salsa, including a green one, is a sign that someone in the kitchen cares about chilli.
- Grilled meat. Steak and chicken should taste of the grill, not of the steam tray.
- The wrap. A tight roll means each bite has a bit of everything.
Reading the table
Because the list is national, it mixes very different places. Chain branches in big shopping areas, such as the Manchester and Glasgow branches of one chain, have review counts in the thousands; a food truck in Bristol or a café in Newcastle has a few dozen or a few hundred. A small pool can swing by a tenth of a star in a week, so weigh the review column alongside the rating.
The table also leaves out every venue our directory holds without Google figures, which includes most chain branches in London and many independents in Brighton and Oxford. For a city-by-city view of where the chains trade, see our guide to the Mexican chains in the UK; for takeaway, see our guide to Mexican takeaway in the UK.
Making one at home
A burrito is one of the easiest Mexican dishes to make well in a British kitchen, because flour tortillas are sold in every supermarket and the fillings are forgiving. Large flour tortillas warmed in a dry pan until they puff slightly are the key step.
- The classic: our carne asada burrito recipe, with grilled steak.
- The slow one: our birria burrito recipe, using the chilli-braised meat from Jalisco.
- The fried one: our chimichangas recipe, the crisp, deep-fried version from the borderlands.
- The beans: our refried beans recipe gives the filling its body.

Do Mexicans eat burritos?
In northern Mexico, yes, though usually smaller and simpler than the British version. In central and southern Mexico, corn tacos are far more common.
Why are so few London venues in the table?
