Best Mexican Restaurants in the East of England, by Google Rating

This page answers the search for the best Mexican restaurants in the East of England with a rule you can check. We took every Mexican venue our directory files under Norwich, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Luton and Ware, kept those with at least fifty Google reviews, and ranked them by average Google rating, using the number of reviews to break ties. The figures are those our directory held in October 2026. 8 venues pass, out of 14 in our listings for these towns.

No single town in the region has enough rated Mexican venues for a ranking of its own, which is why we have grouped them. Nothing here is a tasting verdict from us: it is a crowd measure, published with its method and with the venues it leaves out, so you can see exactly how it was built.

The ranking

Names link to each venue's page in our directory, with the address, the hours we hold and the website where there is one.

Two things stand out. The first is Norwich: the city has 3 ranked venues, including the top two, all close together in the old centre around Timber Hill and the market. The second is how high the whole table sits. Most of the ranked venues are within half a star of the top, so the order in the middle is decided by small differences and by review counts rather than by any clear gap in quality.

The venues at the top

Hours come from each venue's directory listing; check before you travel, particularly outside term time in Cambridge and on Sundays.

Avo

Address: 10 Timber Hill, Norwich NR1 3LB
Google rating: 4.9 from 307 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Tue closed · Wed–Sat 11:30–19:00 · Sun closed
Website: avoburrito.co.uk

On Timber Hill in Norwich, the sloping street of independent shops and cafés below the castle. It leads the table with a rating that is very hard to beat, on a respectable number of reviews.

City Taco

Address: 153 Market Pl, Norwich NR2 1NE
Google rating: 4.8 from 51 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon closed · Tue–Fri 12:00–15:00 · Sat 12:00–16:00 · Sun closed
Website: norwich.gov.uk

On Market Place, beside Norwich's open-air market. Its rating is the second highest in the table, but it has only just crossed our fifty-review threshold, so this is the least settled average in the ranking. Read its recent reviews alongside the number.

Mr Taco

Address: 68A Mill Rd, Petersfield, Cambridge CB1 2AS
Google rating: 4.7 from 270 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Sat 12:00–22:00 · Sun 12:00–21:00
Website: mrtacocambridge.co.uk

On Mill Road in Cambridge, the long, mixed street of independent shops and restaurants that runs south-east from the centre. It leads a three-way tie on rating and wins it on review count, which makes it the steadiest of the three.

The rest of the region

  • Norwich. Plan Burrito Norwich, also on Timber Hill, is the third Norwich venue in the table: a burrito counter, part of a small group that our directory also lists in Canterbury, Loughborough and Leamington Spa.
  • Cambridge. Mexuk on Hills Road, near the station, ties with Mr Taco on rating with a smaller review pool. The chain branches in the city centre have no Google figures in our directory.
  • Ware. The Mexican Ware on Ware's High Street in Hertfordshire has the largest review count in the table, so its rating is the most stable figure here even though it is not the highest.
  • Bury St Edmunds. TACOR on Tayfen Road is ranked; a family restaurant in the town centre is not, for lack of Google figures.
  • Luton. Sabrosa Tacos on Old Bedford Road is ranked. A birria specialist in the town is not, because it has fewer than fifty reviews.

Below the threshold

These venues are in our directory but not in the ranking, either because we hold no Google rating for them or because they have fewer than fifty reviews.

  • Amigos Mexican Restaurant, First Floor, 35-36 Brentgovel Street, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1EA (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Chipotle Cambridge, 26 St Andrew's Street, Cambridge CB2 3AX (no Google rating in our directory)
  • FUZSE Birria, 11 Suffolk Cl, Luton LU4 0NY (4.9 from 37 reviews)
  • Nanna Mexico, 29 Petty Cury, Cambridge CB2 3NB (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Tortilla Cambridge, 22 Sidney Street, Cambridge CB2 3HG (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Tortilla Norwich, 9-11 Castle Meadow, Norwich NR1 3DE (no Google rating in our directory)

The independent on Petty Cury in central Cambridge is the most notable gap: its listing describes a menu that caters for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and halal diets, which is rare in the region. Our guide to Mexican food in Oxford and Cambridge covers the city in more detail, and the Luton birria counter appears in our guide to birria outside London.

Reading a Google rating in the region

An average tells you how satisfied reviewers were. It is not a measure of how closely a kitchen follows a Mexican regional tradition. In this part of England, a few points are worth bearing in mind:

  • University towns review in waves. Cambridge and Norwich both have large student populations, and new students arrive and review in bursts each autumn.
  • Thin pools. Several venues in the table have fewer than a hundred reviews. A small pool can move a tenth of a star with a handful of new reviews.
  • Counters versus restaurants. A taco or burrito counter is judged on speed and value, a restaurant on a whole evening.
  • Missing chains. The national chains in Cambridge and Norwich are listed without Google figures, so this table is mostly independents by accident rather than by design.

What to order

When UNESCO added traditional Mexican cuisine to its intangible heritage list in 2010, it described a tradition built on maize, beans and chilli, with nixtamalisation, cooking maize with lime before grinding it, at its core. The taco is the everyday form of that tradition in Mexico, and most venues in this table are taco or burrito specialists.

Frequently asked questions

How was the ranking decided?

By average Google rating as held in our directory in October 2026, among venues with at least fifty reviews filed under Norwich, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Luton or Ware, with the number of reviews breaking ties.

Why are these towns grouped together?

None of them has five or more rated Mexican venues in our directory, the minimum we set for a ranking of its own.

Why is a well-known Cambridge independent missing?

Our directory does not hold a Google rating for it yet. It is listed below the threshold.

Where can I buy Mexican ingredients in East Anglia?

Our shop directory lists the grocers we have mapped in the region and the online Mexican specialists that deliver there, and every venue here is in the restaurant directory.
