Best Mexican Restaurants in Liverpool and the Wirral, by Google Rating

Here is a straight answer to the question of the best Mexican restaurants in Liverpool, provided you accept our yardstick. We took every Mexican venue filed under Liverpool in our directory, kept the ones with a Google rating and at least fifty Google reviews, and put them in order of average rating, with the number of reviews deciding ties. Figures are as held in our directory in October 2026. 6 venues qualify out of 13 Liverpool listings.

One thing to know first: our Liverpool listings cross the Mersey. Several addresses are in Birkenhead, Bromborough and Bootle, so this is really a Merseyside list, and the addresses in the table tell you which bank of the river each venue is on. We do not score restaurants ourselves; the ranking simply applies one public rule to everyone.

The ranking

Names link to each venue's page in our directory.

The table is compact, and the gaps between neighbours are small. Look at the review column as well as the rating: a venue with over a thousand reviews has an average that hardly moves, while one with a couple of hundred can rise or fall noticeably in a season. Read the order as groups rather than as a strict sequence of positions.

A note on one duplicate listing

Our directory holds two entries for what looks like the same business on Queens Drive: Mexican House, which carries the Google figures, and Mexican House Bar and Grill at 122 Queens Drive, Lark Hill Place, Liverpool L13 0AJ, which has no rating. We have counted it once, under the entry with the rating, so it does not appear twice in this guide.

The top three in detail

These are the venues at the head of the table. Hours come from their listings; check them before a long trip, particularly around match days and bank holidays.

Pina Loca Mexican Restaurant

Address: 24 Allport Ln, Bromborough, Birkenhead, Wirral CH62 7HP
Google rating: 4.8 from 529 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon closed · Tue–Thu 16:00–21:00 · Fri 16:00–21:30 · Sat 12:00–21:30 · Sun 16:00–21:00
Website: pinaloca.co.uk

On the Wirral side, in Bromborough, south of Birkenhead. It is the clearest example of why a Liverpool list that stops at the city boundary misses things: the venue at the top of our table is across the river.

Boojum - Bold Street

Address: 31 Bold St, Liverpool L1 4DN
Google rating: 4.6 from 270 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Tue 11:30–21:00 · Wed–Thu 11:30–22:00 · Fri–Sat 11:30–23:00 · Sun 11:30–22:00
Website: boojummex.com

On Bold Street, the long shopping and restaurant street that climbs from the city centre towards the Georgian Quarter. Boojum is a counter-service burrito bar and one of two Bold Street venues in the table, so if you are on that street you have a choice of formats within a few doors of each other.

Listo Burrito Liverpool

Address: 10 Dale St, Liverpool L2 4TH
Google rating: 4.6 from 211 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Fri 11:00–15:30 · Sat–Sun closed
Website: listoburrito.com

On Dale Street in the commercial district, close to the town hall and the business offices, which goes some way to explaining a lunchtime-heavy pattern of trade.

Below the threshold

These Liverpool listings are not ranked, either because they have fewer than fifty Google reviews in our data or because we do not yet hold a rating for them. Two of them have perfect scores from a small number of reviews, which is exactly the situation the threshold is meant to handle: promising, but not yet comparable with venues reviewed hundreds of times.

  • Big Lola's Taqueria, 493 Smithdown Road, Liverpool L15 5AE (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Fe Caffe, 10 Oxton Rd, Birkenhead CH41 2QJ (5.0 from 32 reviews)
  • Las Iguanas Liverpool, 14 Paradise Street, Liverpool L1 8JF (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Madre Liverpool, 6 Atlantic Pavilion, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AE (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Órale - Mexican Food, 254 Stanley Rd, Bootle L20 3ER (5.0 from 46 reviews)
  • Poco Loco Mexican, 107 Mount Rd, Birkenhead CH42 6RE (4.1 from 32 reviews)
  • Tortilla Liverpool, 70 Lord Street, Liverpool L2 1TL (no Google rating in our directory)

Liverpool by area

  • Bold Street and the city centre. Bold Street, Lord Street, Paradise Street and Dale Street hold the chains and the sit-down restaurants, all walkable from Lime Street and Central stations.
  • The Albert Dock. The waterfront has a venue in our listings that is part of a small restaurant group with a Manchester sister, useful if you are visiting the museums. It has no Google rating in our data yet, so it sits in the list below the threshold.
  • The suburbs. Anfield, Clubmoor and Smithdown Road carry neighbourhood venues that city-centre guides tend to leave out. On match days around Anfield, expect them to be busier.
  • Across the water. Birkenhead and Bromborough on the Wirral, and Bootle to the north, have their own Mexican kitchens, several with small but high-scoring review pools.

For a fuller walk through the area, see our map of where Britain actually has Mexican food, which puts Liverpool in context with the rest of the country.

What a star rating hides

Ratings measure satisfaction. They do not tell you how close a menu is to any regional cooking tradition, and they are shaped by several things unrelated to the food:

  • Location. Venues on Bold Street see far more passing trade, and far more reviews, than a neighbourhood kitchen in Anfield or Birkenhead.
  • Format. A burrito bar is rated on speed and consistency, a sit-down restaurant on the whole evening.
  • Delivery. Reviews from delivery customers judge food that has sat in a box for twenty minutes. Tacos suffer most.
  • Small samples. A perfect score from a few dozen reviews says a lot about early customers' goodwill and less about the long run.

What to order

Liverpool's Mexican menus lean on burritos, tacos and sharing plates. If you want to tell kitchens apart, the tortilla is the giveaway. Traditional Mexican cuisine, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2010, is built on maize, beans and chilli, and on nixtamalisation, the cooking of maize with lime that makes masa. A kitchen that presses its corn tortillas from nixtamalised masa is doing the hard part properly.

  • Birria: a slow-cooked meat dish from Jalisco, traditionally goat. The Tijuana beef version is served as tacos with consommé for dipping, and the cheese-filled quesabirria grew out of it in the 2010s.
  • Al pastor: chilli-marinated pork cooked on a vertical spit, the trompo, which descends from the shawarma brought to Mexico by Lebanese immigrants.
  • Churros: fried dough with sugar, often served with chocolate. Our churros recipe makes them at home.

Our taquería glossary covers the meats and cuts you will meet on a menu.

Frequently asked questions

How is the ranking calculated?

By average Google rating as held in our directory in October 2026, among venues with at least fifty reviews, with the number of reviews as the tie-breaker.

Why are Birkenhead and Bootle included?

Because those venues are filed under Liverpool in our directory. The addresses in the table show exactly where each one is, so you can leave them out if you are staying in the city centre.

Why is a restaurant I like missing?

It is either below fifty reviews in our data or has no Google rating in our directory yet. All of those listings appear in the section below the threshold.

Where can I find Mexican ingredients on Merseyside?

Our shop directory lists the grocers we have mapped, and every restaurant here is in the restaurant directory.
