Mexican Food in Dundee, Aberdeen, Paisley and Falkirk

Most guides to Mexican food in Scotland stop at Glasgow and Edinburgh. This one starts where they stop. Our directory lists 8 Mexican venues in Dundee, Aberdeen, Paisley and Falkirk once a duplicate and an unconfirmed entry are set aside, and Dundee alone accounts for 4 of them. That is a small number for four towns, but it includes some venues with very solid Google records and a city, Dundee, that has quietly built a little cluster of its own.

This is a guide rather than a ranking. Only some of these venues have the fifty or more Google reviews we require for a ranking, too few for a table we would stand behind. Instead, we show every venue with the figures our directory held in October 2026, and we say plainly where our data is thin.

All the venues at a glance

Names link to each venue's page in our directory. Where we hold a Google rating, it is shown with its number of reviews.

  • Amigos, 2 Wallace St, Falkirk FK2 7DW (4.6 from 5 Google reviews)
  • Dos Amigos Aberdeen, 58-60 Justice Mill Lane, Aberdeen AB11 6EP
  • FreshMex, 55 Schoolhill, Aberdeen AB10 1JT (4.4 from 413 Google reviews)
  • La Mesa Paisley, 25 New Street, Paisley PA1 1XU
  • Más, 304 Perth Rd, Dundee DD2 1AU (4.6 from 547 Google reviews)
  • Mexican Grill, 24 Castle St, Dundee DD1 3AF (4.5 from 678 Google reviews)
  • Rancho Pancho, 16 Commercial Street, Dundee DD1 3EJ
  • Wee Mexico, 134a Nethergate, Dundee DD1 4ED (4.4 from 850 Google reviews)

Two entries were set aside. Our directory holds Mexican Grill Dundee twice, once under that name and once with Google figures as Mexican Grill, both on Castle Street; we list it once. And an entry in Paisley, Taste Of Salma only, is filed as Mexican but neither its name nor its listing confirms that it is a Mexican kitchen, so we have left it out until we can check it.

Dundee

Dundee's Mexican venues run in a line from the city centre out along the Nethergate and the Perth Road towards the university and the West End, which makes it easy to compare them in a single walk. The city has two universities, and both the student districts and the city centre are covered.

Más

Address: 304 Perth Rd, Dundee DD2 1AU
Google rating: 4.6 from 547 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Fri 16:00–23:00 · Sat–Sun 12:00–23:00
Website: masmexican.co.uk

On the Perth Road in the West End, the long street of cafés, pubs and shops that runs out of the city centre past the university. It has the highest Google average of the Dundee venues in our directory, on a solid number of reviews.

Mexican Grill

Address: 24 Castle St, Dundee DD1 3AF
Google rating: 4.5 from 678 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Thu 16:00–23:00 · Fri–Sat 12:00–23:00 · Sun 15:00–23:00
Website: mexicangrilldundee.com

On Castle Street, in the city centre near the waterfront. Its fuller directory entry describes a Tex-Mex restaurant and cocktail bar with fajitas, burritos and tacos. It has a large number of reviews behind its rating.

Wee Mexico

Address: 134a Nethergate, Dundee DD1 4ED
Google rating: 4.4 from 850 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): not listed in our directory

On the Nethergate, between the centre and the university. It has the largest review count of any venue on this page. Its listing says the whole menu of burritos and tacos is available in vegan, gluten-free and halal versions, which is unusual anywhere in the UK and makes it the obvious choice for a group with mixed diets. It also appears in our guide to halal Mexican food in the UK.

The fourth Dundee venue, Rancho Pancho on Commercial Street, has no Google figures in our directory. Its listing describes a contemporary Mexican restaurant and bar that has run in the city for a long time; we cannot add numbers to that, but it is worth knowing about.

Aberdeen

Aberdeen has two venues in our directory. FreshMex on Schoolhill, close to the art gallery and Union Street, has 4.4 on Google from 413 reviews. Dos Amigos Aberdeen on Justice Mill Lane, behind Union Street, is described in its listing as a Spanish and Mexican restaurant with tapas, fajitas, paella and burritos; it has no Google figures in our data. For a city of Aberdeen's size, that is a thin offering, and if you know a venue we have missed, our directory is where it should go.

Paisley and Falkirk

In Paisley, La Mesa Paisley on New Street in the town centre is described in its listing as a Mexican restaurant with tacos, fajitas, burritos and sizzling dishes. It has no Google figures in our directory. Paisley is a short train ride from Glasgow, whose much larger Mexican scene is covered in our Glasgow neighbourhood guide and our Glasgow ranking.

In Falkirk, Amigos on Wallace Street has 4.6 on Google from 5 reviews; that is a very small pool of reviews, so the average says little yet. Edinburgh, a short train ride away, has its own ranking.

Tex-Mex and Mexican in Scotland

Several venues on this page describe themselves as Tex-Mex or list fajitas and sizzling platters. That is worth understanding rather than dismissing. Tex-Mex is the cooking of Texans of Mexican descent, a cuisine with its own history; fajitas, for example, began as skirt steak grilled by ranch hands in South and West Texas and became a restaurant dish there in 1969. It is not a failed copy of Mexican food, but it is different from what a taquería in Mexico City or Guadalajara serves.

If you want to taste the difference, look for dishes built on corn rather than wheat. When UNESCO inscribed traditional Mexican cuisine as intangible cultural heritage in 2010, it put maize, beans and chilli at the centre, and named nixtamalisation, cooking maize with lime before grinding it, as a defining technique. Corn tortillas made from nixtamalised masa are the clearest sign of that tradition on a menu.

Cooking it yourself in the north-east
