Authentic Mexican Shops in the UK

208 shops in our directory.

Specialist Mexican shops are the best place to stock up if you want to cook serious Mexican food in the UK. Unlike generic Latin supermarkets, these shops focus exclusively on imported Mexican produce: dried chillies (ancho, guajillo, pasilla, chipotle, morita, árbol, piquín, chiltepín, habanero), fresh nixtamalised masa, freshly made tortillas, leaves (banana, hoja santa, epazote), regional salsas (Valentina, Cholula, Búfalo, Tajín, Yucateca), mole pastes, table chocolate, achiote, Mexican vanilla, and artisanal mezcals and tequilas.

Across the UK there are 208 Mexican shops in our directory, concentrated in London (Brixton, Hackney, Camden, Peckham), Manchester (Northern Quarter, Chorlton), Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol. Some are artisanal tortillerías nixtamalising their maize daily, others are full grocers with a Mexican butchery section (cecina, chorizo, tasajo), and others are deli/restaurants with a shop attached.

What to look for: good rotation of dried chillies (they shouldn't be brittle or faded), fresh masa made the same day, recognised brands (La Costeña, Maseca for masa harina, Hatuey, Sol, San Marcos) and Mexican staff who can advise on which chilli to use for each recipe or how to rehydrate them. The best shops also bring in fresh produce weekly: coriander, tomatillos, nopales and fresh chillies such as manzano or habanero.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find authentic dried chillies in the UK?

At specialist Mexican shops in London (Brixton, Hackney, Peckham), Manchester (Northern Quarter), Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol. Serious shops import directly from Mexico and rotate stock weekly. Chillies should be soft and aromatic - not brittle.

Which ingredients can't I find in mainstream UK supermarkets?

Fresh nixtamalised masa, hoja santa, fresh epazote, achiote paste, specialist dried chillies (mulato, pasilla mixe, costeño, chilhuacle), Oaxaca cheese, Mexican crema, table chocolate and artisanal mezcal with denomination of origin. For these you really need a Mexican shop.

Do Mexican shops in the UK make their own tortillas?

Some do - those with their own tortillería nixtamalise imported Mexican maize and press tortillas the same day. London has a handful of active artisanal tortillerías. Always ask whether the masa is made the same day and whether they use Mexican maize or Maseca.

Do Mexican shops deliver across the UK?

Yes - several have e-commerce with 24-48h delivery across mainland Britain and chilled packaging for fresh products (masa, tortillas, cheese). Typical minimum orders: £25-£50. Some also ship to mainland Europe.
