Best Mexican Restaurants in the North West Beyond Manchester

Manchester and Liverpool have their own Mexican rankings. This page is for everyone else in the North West: the Greater Manchester towns, Lancashire and the edge of the Lake District. To answer the search for the best Mexican restaurants in the North West beyond the two big cities, we took every Mexican venue our directory files under Bolton, Stockport, Altrincham, Preston, Blackpool and Kendal, kept those with at least fifty Google reviews, and ranked them by average Google rating, breaking ties on the number of reviews. The figures are those our directory held in October 2026. 5 venues pass, out of 12 we list under these towns.

Nothing on this page is a tasting verdict from us. A Google average is a crowd measure, and in smaller towns crowds are small, so we explain the limits of the method and list every venue the rule leaves out.

The ranking

Names link to each venue's page in our directory. Read the address column: our directory files venues under the nearest large town, so this table includes Windermere (filed under Kendal), Radcliffe (filed under Bolton) and Blackburn (filed under Preston).

5Mexican Villa610 Blackburn Rd, Astley Bridge, Bolton BL1 7AL4.5128

This is a table of independents. None of the national chains appears, and the venues are spread across three counties, from the seaside to the Lakes. It is also a table where review counts vary enormously, so the second column is as important as the first.

The venues at the top

Hours come from each venue's directory listing. Seaside and Lakeland venues often change their hours with the season, so check before you travel.

Biteo

Address: 248 Lytham Rd, Blackpool FY1 6EX
Google rating: 5.0 from 62 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Sat 11:15–22:00 · Sun 14:30–22:00
Website: biteo.megapos.shop

On Lytham Road in Blackpool, south of the town centre towards the airport. It has the highest average in the table, but on a modest number of reviews. Averages that high rarely survive a much larger pool unchanged, so treat the top spot as a strong recommendation from a small crowd.

Bandito Burrito, Windermere, Cumbria (Independent cafe)

Address: 30 Main Rd, Windermere LA23 1DY
Google rating: 4.9 from 810 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Wed closed · Thu 11:00–17:15 · Fri 11:00–19:00 · Sat 11:00–17:15 · Sun closed
Website: banditoburrito.co.uk

On Main Road in Windermere, the Lake District's busiest tourist town. This is the most reliable result on the page: a near-perfect average built on by far the largest review count in the table. Its listing describes an unfussy café with Mexican dishes, vegan options and coffee, plus takeaway.

Acapulco Cantina

Address: 11 Blackburn St, Radcliffe, Manchester M26 1PN
Google rating: 4.6 from 68 reviews (as held in our directory, October 2026)
Opening hours (directory listing): Mon–Wed closed · Thu–Sat 16:00–21:00 · Sun 13:00–18:00
Website: acapulcocantina.co.uk

On Blackburn Street in Radcliffe, between Bury and Manchester, though our directory files it under Bolton. Its review pool is only just past our threshold, so its place is less settled than the ones around it.

The rest of the ranked venues

  • Blackburn. Pretty Pepper Mexican Grill on Shear Brow, filed under Preston in our directory, is ranked with a good number of reviews behind it.
  • Bolton. Mexican Villa on Blackburn Road in Astley Bridge, north of the town centre, is ranked on the same average as the Blackburn venue, with fewer reviews.

Below the threshold

These venues are in our directory but not in the ranking, because we hold no Google figures for them or because they have fewer than fifty reviews. Several are well regarded locally, including a taquería on Stockport's Market Place, a taco stall in Altrincham Market and the original Don Tacos on Deansgate in Bolton, so treat this list as a gap in our data rather than a verdict.

  • Casa Burritos (Stockport), 321a Buxton Rd, Stockport SK2 7NL (3.5 from 47 reviews)
  • Don Tacos Bolton, 119 Deansgate, Bolton BL1 1HA (no Google rating in our directory)
  • La Capilla at Blackshaws, 28-29 Market Place, Stockport SK1 1ES (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Mexican city, 2 Buxton Rd, Hazel Grove, Stockport SK7 6AD (3.6 from 10 reviews)
  • Pedro's Casa, 128 Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4QG (no Google rating in our directory)
  • Pico's Tacos Altrincham, Altrincham Market, Greenwood Street, Altrincham WA14 1SA (no Google rating in our directory)
  • TACO BONITO, 11 Corporation St, Preston PR1 2UP (3.9 from 10 reviews)

Two of these deserve a note. The Altrincham stall belongs to the same name as a taco stall in Mackie Mayor, the food hall in Manchester's Northern Quarter, and the Bolton taquería is listed as the original of a business that later opened in Manchester; both are covered in our Manchester ranking and area guide. If you are nearer Merseyside, see our Liverpool ranking.

The North West by area

  • The Greater Manchester towns. Bolton, Radcliffe, Stockport and Altrincham have a mix of restaurants, a market-hall stall and a market-place taquería. Most lack Google figures in our data.
  • Lancashire. Blackpool and Blackburn each have a ranked venue, and Preston has a city-centre taco counter.
  • Cumbria. Windermere and Kendal, at the southern gateway to the Lakes, have a ranked café and a family restaurant that mixes Mexican and Spanish dishes.

Reading a Google rating outside the cities

An average tells you how satisfied reviewers were. It does not measure how closely a kitchen follows a Mexican regional tradition. Outside the big cities a few patterns are especially strong:

  • Small pools swing. Some ranked venues are only just past our fifty-review threshold. One bad week can move their average noticeably.
  • Tourist towns review heavily. Windermere's visitors give a venue there a review count a town-centre restaurant in Lancashire would take years to match.
  • Burritos are the common language. The burrito comes from northern Mexico; the large, filled version most British counters sell owes more to California. A high score says the burrito is good.
  • Market stalls are under-reviewed. Stalls in market halls collect fewer reviews than restaurants, which is why the Stockport and Altrincham venues are missing.

What to order

When UNESCO inscribed traditional Mexican cuisine on its intangible heritage list in 2010, it described a tradition resting on maize, beans and chilli, with nixtamalisation, cooking maize with lime before grinding it, as a defining technique. The taco, a corn tortilla folded round a filling, is that tradition's everyday form, and the place to start.

  • Tacos on corn tortillas, where they are offered. Our cochinita pibil tacos recipe is a slow-roast that suits a northern weekend.
  • A burrito at the café in Windermere or the counters in the towns. To make one at home, follow our carne asada burrito recipe.
  • Something to drink. Our horchata recipe makes the cinnamon rice drink sold at taquerías across Mexico.
