From Olvera Street to Boyle Heights: 18 Mexican Food Stops Across Central LA

Sep 28, 20264 min read(Updated: Sep 29, 2026)

Eighteen active Mexican restaurants across Downtown, Boyle Heights, Koreatown and South LA, mapped by address with real Google ratings from our directory.

Los Angeles has one of the largest concentrations of Mexican restaurants of any city in our directory, and it's spread across neighborhoods with very different histories — the historic Mexican settlement at Olvera Street, the working-class Eastside anchored by Boyle Heights, the Koreatown and Mid-City corridor along Olympic Boulevard, and pockets further south and east. Rather than one flat list, this guide groups the 18 active locations in our data by area, in the order you'd realistically drive them.

We're using the neighborhood names our own directory records where it has them, and sticking to plain street addresses where it doesn't — we won't assign a neighborhood label the data itself doesn't support.

Downtown and Olvera Street

AddressNameType
23 Olvera St (El Pueblo/Downtown)Cielito LindoTaquería
609 S Spring StTacos 1986Taquería
208 E 8th StSonoratownTaquería

Cielito Lindo has operated on Olvera Street, the oldest commercial block in the city, since the 1930s by its own account — we can't verify the exact founding year against our directory, which only tracks current business data, but its listing carries no Google rating on file, which is common for long-running stalls with an unusual review pattern. Sonoratown, four blocks away at 8th and Spring, is the highest-rated of the three at 4.5 stars across 3,382 reviews.

Boyle Heights and the Eastside

AddressNameType
2100 E Cesar E Chavez AveGuisadosTaquería
3040 E Olympic BlvdMariscos JaliscoMexicano
812 N Evergreen Ave (Boyle Heights)El Tepeyac CafeMexicano

Our directory tags El Tepeyac Cafe's address directly with "Boyle Heights," and Guisados and Mariscos Jalisco sit on the same Eastside street grid a short drive away. El Tepeyac carries 4,935 reviews at 4.5 stars — the highest review count of any restaurant in this guide outside the Olympic Boulevard corridor below. Mariscos Jalisco, at 4.6 stars, is the highest-rated single location in this entire piece.

Koreatown and Mid-City: the Olympic Boulevard corridor

AddressNameType
3014 W Olympic BlvdGuelaguetzaMexicano
3040 E Olympic BlvdMariscos JaliscoMexicano (listed above)
1436 S Vermont Ave (Pico-Union/Koreatown)Casa Gish BacMexicano

Guelaguetza, specializing in Oaxacan food, has the single largest review count in this whole guide: 6,572 reviews at 4.3 stars. Its Olympic Boulevard address places it in the same broad corridor as Casa Gish Bac on Vermont Avenue, which our directory tags to the Pico-Union/Koreatown boundary.

South LA and the Grand Avenue cluster

AddressNameType
3655 S Grand Ave Ste C6 (Historic South-Central)Chichén ItzáMexicano
3655 S Grand Ave Ste C9HolboxMexicano
6015 S Avalon BlvdCarnitas El MomoTaquería
731 E Slauson Ave (South Los Angeles)Teddy's Red TacosTaquería

Chichén Itzá and Holbox share the exact same street address — different suite numbers in the same commercial building — and both specialize in Yucatecan and coastal Mexican seafood respectively. Holbox is the single highest-rated location in this guide at 4.8 stars across 2,961 reviews. Teddy's Red Tacos' Slauson Avenue location is a second location for the same brand that also appears further north on Sunset Boulevard, listed below.

Highland Park

AddressNameType
5225 York Blvd (Highland Park)El Huarache AztecaOtro
5455 N Figueroa St (Highland Park)Villa's TacosTaquería

Both of these carry the "Highland Park" tag directly in our directory's address field. Villa's Tacos is rated 4.6 across 1,181 reviews; El Huarache Azteca has no rating on file.

Other pockets: Sunset Boulevard, La Brea, Los Feliz and West Adams

AddressNameType
1130 W Sunset BlvdTeddy's Red Tacos (1st location)Taquería
1515 S La Brea AveLeo's Tacos TruckTaquería
1712 N Vermont Ave (Los Feliz)MírateMexicano
4301 W Jefferson Blvd (West Adams)Poncho's TlayudasOtro

Leo's Tacos Truck on La Brea is the second most-reviewed location in this entire guide at 5,897 reviews, and 4.5 stars.

The numbers across all 18

Fourteen of the 18 locations carry a Google rating; the average across those 14 is 4.49. Review counts span from 76 (Casa Gish Bac) to 6,572 (Guelaguetza) — a spread of nearly two orders of magnitude, which tells you these 18 range from long-running neighborhood staples with a small but loyal review base to citywide destinations. By type, taquerías outnumber full-menu mexicano restaurants 9 to 7, with 2 listings falling outside either category in our directory's classification.
