Tucson, Arizona: What Our Directory Shows for Mexican Food and Groceries
Six Mexican restaurants and nine grocery stores in Tucson, Arizona, including four Food City locations — real addresses from our directory, with declared data gaps.
Tucson holds a well-documented place in Sonoran-style Mexican food — it was the first city in the United States designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, in 2015, a recognition tied specifically to its Mexican and Indigenous food traditions. That's a fact from an external source, not a claim our own directory can verify; what our directory can verify is what businesses it has actually captured for the city, which turns out to be a smaller and more grocery-heavy slice than the restaurant-first guides you'll find elsewhere.
The restaurants
| Address | Name | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1813 S 4th Ave | Mi Nidito | Mexicano |
| 533 N 4th Ave | BOCA Tacos y Tequila | Mexicano |
| 2618 S 6th Ave | Taqueria Pico de Gallo | Taquería |
| 311 N Court Ave | El Charro Cafe | Mexicano |
| 354 S Main Ave | El Minuto Cafe | Mexicano |
| 5802 E 22nd St | El Guero Canelo | Mexicano |
Two of the six — Mi Nidito and BOCA Tacos y Tequila — sit on 4th Avenue, on its south and north segments respectively. None of the six restaurants carries a Google rating or review count in our directory's current data. That's not a judgment about any of these six kitchens; it's a gap in what this particular data pull captured, and we're stating it directly rather than filling it with an invented star rating.
The stores: Food City shows up four times
Tucson's grocery side of the directory is dominated by one chain. Of the nine stores we have on file, four are Food City locations:
| Address | Store |
|---|---|
| 1740 W Ajo Way | Food City |
| 2001 E Irvington Rd | Food City |
| 428 W Valencia Rd | Food City |
| 3030 E 22nd St | Food City |
That's 44% of Tucson's nine grocery listings under a single banner — the highest single-chain concentration of any city in this round of guides. The remaining five stores are independent: Los Amigos Meat Market (3929 S 12th Ave) and El Herradero (5434 S 12th Ave) both sit on 12th Avenue's south stretch; Mercado y Carniceria Mexicana (6211 E 22nd St) shares 22nd Street with the Food City at 3030 and, further east, with El Guero Canelo's restaurant listing at 5802 — three Mexican food businesses on the same named street when you count both tables. Cardenas Markets (902 W Irvington Rd) sits a short distance from the Food City on East Irvington, and Mercado y Carniceria Los Primos, at 9895 S Old Nogales Highway, is the furthest-flung listing in the city's directory.
None of the nine stores carries a Google rating either — the entire Tucson data set, restaurants and stores combined, shows zero published ratings in our directory as of this pull. That's unusual compared with every other city in this batch, where at least a handful of listings carry a score, and it's worth flagging as a genuine limitation of the data rather than glossing over it.
Ratings are missing; websites aren't
The absence of rating data doesn't mean these businesses are absent from the web entirely. All six of Tucson's restaurants — Mi Nidito, BOCA Tacos y Tequila, Taqueria Pico de Gallo, El Charro Cafe, El Minuto Cafe and El Guero Canelo — have a website on file in our directory. On the store side, all four Food City locations share the chain's own site, and Cardenas Markets has its own; the four smaller independent stores (Los Amigos Meat Market, El Herradero, Mercado y Carniceria Mexicana, and Mercado y Carniceria Los Primos) do not. That split — five of nine stores online, four relying purely on foot traffic — tracks with the same big-chain-versus-independent pattern we've found in Hialeah and Marietta in other guides in this series: chain locations consistently carry a web presence, and small family-run mercados often don't.
What this means for a visit
Without rating or review data, we can't tell you which of these 15 businesses has the most consistent track record on Google. What we can tell you is where they are, and that 22nd Street and 4th Avenue are the two closest things to a corridor in the city's Mexican food map, and that Food City is the anchor grocery chain if you're stocking a Sonoran-style kitchen — chiles, masa, and the wheat-flour tortillas the region is known for locally.
