What 630 Mexican Restaurants Across the US Actually Look Like, by the Numbers

Sep 28, 20265 min read(Updated: Sep 29, 2026)

A data-driven look at our directory of 630 active Mexican restaurants and 536 grocery stores across the US — by state, by type, by rating, and by what's still missing.

Most guides to "the best Mexican food in America" are built from a handful of writers' opinions stitched together. This one is built from something different: our own directory of 630 active Mexican restaurants and 536 grocery stores across the United States, each with a real street address, and for most of them, a Google rating and review count. We're not using that data to crown winners — Google ratings measure review-pool consensus, not culinary merit, and our directory is mapped, not evaluated. What we can do is show you the shape of the dataset itself, which is its own kind of story.

Just 12 states account for every listing

Our active US restaurant directory spans exactly 12 states — not because Mexican restaurants don't exist anywhere else in the country, but because that's the current reach of the data we've captured:

StateActive restaurants
Texas111
Florida87
California62
Georgia59
Arizona56
Illinois56

Six more states — Nevada (55), Washington (53), New York (42), North Carolina (33), Colorado (15) and Connecticut (1) — round out the full 630. Texas alone accounts for nearly 18% of every active listing in the directory, and the top four states combined (Texas, Florida, California, Georgia) make up almost half of it. Connecticut, at the other end, has exactly one restaurant on file — a reminder that directory coverage and where Mexican restaurants actually exist in the real world are two different things; this dataset reflects where our data collection has reached, not a census of the country.

123 cities, and a small number that dominate

Restaurants in the directory span 123 distinct cities. The top seven by restaurant count — Chicago (41), Las Vegas (34), Phoenix (33), Atlanta (25), New York (25), Los Angeles (24) and Seattle (23) — account for roughly a third of every active restaurant listing nationally, even though they're 7 of 123 cities, under 6% of the total city count. The long tail matters too: more than 60 cities in the directory have five or fewer restaurants, which is exactly the raw material behind several of the smaller-city and multi-city guides in this same batch of articles.

Taquería vs. mexicano vs. cantina: what the classification looks like

Every restaurant in our directory is tagged with one of six types. Here's the full breakdown, active listings only:

TypeCountAvg. rating
Mexicano336 total (252 rated)4.46
Taquería250 total (169 rated)4.45
Cantina26 total (21 rated)4.47
Tex-Mex19 total (19 rated)4.45
Fusion18 total (13 rated)4.53
Otro6 total (3 rated)4.50

The headline here is how flat the ratings are across categories — every type averages between 4.45 and 4.53, a gap of less than a tenth of a point. Whatever Google's aggregate rating measures, it isn't systematically favoring one restaurant format over another at the national level. Where types do diverge is review volume: Tex-Mex restaurants average 4,131 reviews per listing, roughly double the 2,053 average for mexicano-style restaurants and nearly double taquerías' 2,076 — even though Tex-Mex accounts for only 19 of 630 listings. A small number of high-traffic Tex-Mex chains are likely pulling that average up.

Grocery stores: supermercado format dominates

The 536 active stores split into four types, and one format clearly leads:

TypeCount
Supermercado268
Tienda mexicana195
Mercado42
Tienda latina31

Full-format supermarkets outnumber small tienda-style groceries by more than 70 listings, even though corner tiendas are the more visible format in many of the neighborhood-level guides in this series (Doraville's Buford Highway corridor, for instance, or Brooklyn's Sunset Park stretch). Nationally, though, supermercado-scale stores are the plurality format.

The five most-reviewed restaurants in the country

RestaurantCity, StateReviews
Mi Tierra Cafe y PanaderiaSan Antonio, TX25,442
Don Julio Mexican Kitchen - ChickasawOrlando, FL20,619
Tacos El GordoLas Vegas, NV17,611
Rreal TacosAtlanta, GA15,815
Tacos El GordoChula Vista, CA11,630

Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia's 25,442 reviews is more than double the next closest restaurant, and more than the combined review count of every restaurant in four or five of the smaller cities covered elsewhere in this series. The Tacos El Gordo chain appears twice in the national top five, in two different states — a genuinely unusual level of consistency for a single brand.

On the grocery side, Historic Market Square (also known as El Mercado) in San Antonio leads with 18,746 reviews, followed by Food Bazaar Supermarket in Corona (New York City), Plaza Fiesta in Atlanta, Mi Tienda by H-E-B in Houston, and El Bolillo Bakery, also in Houston — two of the top five grocery destinations nationally sit in Houston alone.

The gap: more than a quarter of restaurants have no website on file

Of the 630 active restaurants in our directory, 171 — 27% — have no website recorded. That's a real, checkable limitation of the underlying Google Places data, not a reflection of how many of these businesses actually have an online presence; some may simply rely on a Facebook page, a delivery-app listing, or no digital storefront at all. It's also 24% of active restaurants — 153 of 630 — that carry no Google rating whatsoever, which lines up with what we found city-by-city elsewhere in this series: some cities, like Tucson or Jacksonville and Tallahassee together, show a near-total absence of rating data, while others, like Henderson or Brooklyn, have it for nearly every listing.
