Mexican Restaurants and Mercados in Charlotte, NC: What's Actually There

Sep 28, 20265 min read(Updated: Sep 29, 2026)

A directory-based look at Charlotte's Mexican restaurants and grocery stores — nine kitchens, ten mercados, and what the ratio between them might mean.

Charlotte doesn't show up on most people's mental map of Mexican food in the US the way Los Angeles or Chicago does. But North Carolina's largest city has a real, mapped Mexican food scene, and the numbers behind it are more interesting than a simple restaurant list.

As of September 28, 2026, RecetasMexas' internal directory lists 9 active Mexican restaurants and 10 active Mexican or Latino grocery stores in Charlotte proper. That's a nearly 1:1 ratio between kitchens and markets — a pattern worth sitting with before we get to the addresses.

The restaurants, as mapped

La Caseta1801 N Graham St, Ste 203Mexican
Sabor Latin Street Grill415 Hawthorne LnMexican

Two of these — Cabo Fish Taco and La Capital MX — are logged in our database as "fusion" rather than straight Mexican, which tracks with Charlotte's broader dining identity: a city that absorbs regional Mexican cooking into a more general Southern-meets-coastal fusion lane. Don Pedro appears twice under two different owners/locations (South Tryon St and Chancellor Park Dr), both independently listed, which is common for regional mini-chains that don't franchise formally.

Only one restaurant in our Charlotte set carries a public rating in our system: Three Amigos Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, at 4.3 (Google, review count not populated in our data as of the last check). We are not stating ratings for the other eight restaurants because our directory does not currently hold verified rating data for them — NOT VERIFIED, and left that way rather than guessed.

None of the nine Charlotte restaurant listings in our directory carry a last_confirmed_at date (the field our internal verification workflow uses to mark a phone-call or in-person re-check). All nine do carry an info_last_verified_at timestamp of June 2, 2026, which reflects when the listing was last touched by our data pipeline — not necessarily a live call to the business. We're flagging that distinction because it matters: the database has been touched recently, but that is not the same claim as "confirmed open and unchanged as of today."

The mercados: a bigger list than the restaurants

Super Mercado El Mariachi6301 N Tryon StSupermarket
Supermercado El Rey6300 South Blvd Ste 200BSupermarket

Two of these ten — Carniceria La Mexicana Warehouse and La Bonita Mexican Grocery Store — have no street address in our database, only "Charlotte, NC" as a placeholder. We're not filling that in with a guess; if you're looking for either of those two, treat the address as NOT VERIFIED and confirm by phone before visiting. The other eight all carry full street addresses.

Geographically, the South Boulevard corridor (South Blvd) does real work here: La Unica Super Center Internacional, Lupitas Carniceria & Tortilleria, and Supermercado El Rey all sit within about two miles of each other along that stretch, alongside La Capital MX. East Independence Boulevard is the other visible cluster, with Super G Mart and Supermercado El Mariachi's sibling stretch of N Tryon St nearby.

The 1:1 ratio, and what it might mean

Here's the original calculation: Charlotte has 9 restaurants and 10 stores in our directory, a ratio of 0.9 restaurants per store (or, inverted, 1.11 stores per restaurant).

Compare that to Atlanta, a much larger metro with a longer-established Mexican community, where our directory logs 25 restaurants against 10 stores — a ratio of 2.5 restaurants per store, nearly three times higher than Charlotte's.

We want to be careful about over-reading this. A lower restaurants-per-store ratio in Charlotte could mean several different things, and our directory data alone can't distinguish between them:

  • It could reflect a community that is still relatively young and grocery-anchored — people cooking at home more than eating out, which is a common early-settlement pattern before a dining scene matures.
  • It could reflect uneven coverage in our own directory — Charlotte restaurants may simply be under-mapped relative to stores, since directory completeness varies by city and isn't itself a population measure.
  • It could reflect genuine market structure — Charlotte's grocery format (large-format supermarkets like Super G Mart and La Unica, which serve broad Latino audiences beyond just Mexican shoppers) versus a still-developing standalone-restaurant scene.

We're not going to pick one of these and present it as settled. What we can say with confidence, because it comes directly from counting our own rows, is the ratio itself: 0.9 vs. 2.5. That's a real, calculated difference between two Sun Belt cities with growing Latino populations, and it's the kind of number that's more useful as a starting question than a conclusion.

What this means if you're actually going

If you live in Charlotte and want Mexican groceries, the South Boulevard corridor and East Independence Boulevard are your two anchor areas based on what's mapped. If you want a sit-down meal, your options are more spread out — Cabo's Mexican Cuisine on Carmel Rd is well south, while Azteca on Woodlawn Rd and Sabor Latin Street Grill on Hawthorne Ln sit closer to the center of the city.

We'd also flag: our directory is a snapshot, not a live feed. Restaurants close, mercados change ownership, and a business with no phone number on file (as is the case for both address-less mercados above) is harder for us to re-verify quickly. Treat this list as a starting point for your own visit or call, not a guarantee of current hours or stock.
