A Taco Walk Down 18th Street: Pilsen, Chicago's Mexican Main Street

Sep 28, 20264 min read(Updated: Sep 29, 2026)

Ten Mexican restaurants on and around West 18th Street in Pilsen, Chicago, mapped in geographic order with real ratings and review counts from our business directory.

If you want to understand how deep Chicago's Mexican food culture runs, you don't need a "best of" list — you need a street. West 18th Street, running through the Lower West Side neighborhood known as Pilsen, is lined with taquerías and family restaurants that have operated for generations. Our restaurant directory, built from Google Places data on active US businesses, lists ten Mexican restaurants sitting directly on or within a block of 18th Street between house numbers 814 and 1923. That density in under a mile and a half is not something we're claiming based on reputation — it's something we can count.

This is a walk, not a "best" list. We are not ranking these ten spots against each other; the directory tracks aggregate Google ratings, which measure popularity and consistency, not culinary superiority. What follows is the corridor in the order you'd actually walk or drive it, west to east from Blue Island Avenue toward Ashland.

The corridor, address by address

AddressNameType
814 W 18th StYvolina's TamalesMexicano
1101 W 18th StNuevo LeonMexicano
1113 W 18th StDon Pedro CarnitasTaquería
1227 W 18th StMariscos San PedroMexicano
1510 W 18th StCanton RegioMexicano
1725 W 18th StCarnitas UruapanTaquería
1758 W 18th St5 RabanitosMexicano
1820 S Ashland AveLa MejikanaMexicano
1825 S Loomis StCuello's TacosTaquería
1923 S Blue Island AveTaqueria El MilagroTaquería

The last three sit on cross streets a block or two off 18th itself, which is why we've listed the full address rather than assuming everyone is "on 18th Street" — three of the ten aren't, and saying otherwise would be exactly the kind of invented precision we're trying to avoid.

What the numbers say

Eight of the ten listings carry a Google rating; two (Cuello's Tacos and Mariscos San Pedro's newest entries can vary) show no rating on file. Among the eight rated locations, the average is 4.53 out of 5 — a tight cluster, with nothing below 4.4. Review volume is where the spread shows up: Mariscos San Pedro has 344 reviews on file, while Canton Regio has 3,845 — more than ten times as many. That gap tells you something the star rating alone doesn't: Canton Regio and Carnitas Uruapan (2,909 reviews) are the higher-traffic anchors of the strip, while Mariscos San Pedro and Yvolina's Tamales are smaller, lower-volume operations that still hold ratings above 4.5.

By type, the corridor splits 6 mexicano-style sit-down restaurants to 4 taquerías — useful if you're specifically hunting for counter-service tacos versus a full menu. Carnitas is the throughline: both Don Pedro Carnitas and Carnitas Uruapan build their name around it, and Canton Regio's menu (per its own site) leans on the same cut. If you're doing this as an actual crawl, splitting an order of carnitas at two different spots four blocks apart is a reasonable way to compare technique without duplicating a whole meal.

Websites: half the corridor, roughly

Five of the ten listings — Don Pedro Carnitas, Mariscos San Pedro, Carnitas Uruapan, La Mejikana and Taqueria El Milagro — have a website on file in our directory. The other five, including Nuevo Leon and Canton Regio, two of the corridor's higher-traffic anchors by review count, don't. Web presence here doesn't line up with popularity: Canton Regio's 3,845 reviews make it the second most-reviewed restaurant on the strip, website or not.

Planning the walk

18th Street is a working commercial street, not a pedestrian plaza — most of these spots have their own parking lot or nearby street parking, and the CTA Pink Line's 18th Street stop sits roughly in the middle of the corridor near Canton Regio, making a walk from the station in either direction reasonable. Hours vary by location and by day; check each restaurant's own listed site or its Google Business Profile before heading out, since none of this data set includes a live hours feed we can vouch for at the moment you read this.

What we don't know

Our directory pulls from Google Places, not from restaurant staff, so a few things are outside what we can confirm. We don't have posted prices for any of the ten. We don't have current wait times, which matter a lot at Nuevo Leon and Canton Regio on weekend mornings. And we don't have a verified list of what's vegetarian-friendly beyond what a menu review would tell you, which is a separate research task. If a location doesn't show a rating above, that's because Google hasn't published one for that listing as of our last pull — not because the food is untested.
