Of the 117 Mexican venues we have mapped in London, only 24 carry a Google rating. Here they are, ranked by Google, with an honest account of the gap.

The Highest-Rated Mexican Restaurants in London According to Google, and the 93 With No Rating at All

London is the biggest Mexican market in our European data: 117 venues mapped, which is more than the whole of Australia's six largest cities combined and roughly a third of everything we hold for the United Kingdom. It is also the market where a ratings-based list is hardest to write honestly, because only 24 of those 117 venues carry a Google rating in our directory.

So this piece does two jobs. It lists the 24 as Google rates them, and then it tells you what is in the other 93, because a guide that silently dropped four-fifths of a city would be the kind of guide this one is trying not to be.

The price tier column is Google's own £ to ££££ scale, not ours and not a price list. Where it is blank, the listing carries no tier.

Read the review counts before you read the ratings

Two entries on that table hold a 4.9 and a 4.0 from fewer than twenty reviews each — Tacos Mx Balham with 14, Taqueria Mexico with 19. Those are not rankings, they are rounding errors with a decimal point. At the other end, Mestizo on Hampstead Road holds 4.6 from 9,780 reviews, which is the deepest Mexican review pool in the United Kingdom and a far harder number to hold than a 5.0 from 270.

If you want the five London addresses where a high rating is backed by serious volume, they are Mestizo Hampstead Road (4.6 / 9,780), El Pastor London Bridge (4.4 / 4,103), Los Mochis London City (4.5 / 3,587), Mestizo Chelsea (4.7 / 3,219) and BIRRIA TACO on Chamberlayne Road (4.6 / 1,699).

The geography of the rated list

South-east London is strongly represented and that is not an accident of our data: Rye Lane in Peckham alone has two entries — TAQUIZA at 115 and Taca Tacos at 200 — with El Mero Taco on Amelia Street in Walworth and Two Twins Tacos in Brixton's Granville Arcade nearby. North-east London supplies 91 Bites and TA-KO on the Kingsland Road and Stoke Newington High Street corridor, plus Taco Collective at 32 Kingsland Rd and Tacos MX on Morning Lane in Hackney.

West London's entries sit at the pricier end: Mestizo Chelsea on the King's Road at Google's £££ tier, Yucca on the Fulham Road, Coyo Taco in Westminster. Camden contributes the only 5.0 in the city, Taquería Don Chuy at 109 Camden High Street. Our area guides cover these in more detail: central and west London, east and north London, and south London.

Now the 93 without a rating, because they are not a rounding error

The unrated 93 are not fringe venues. They include KOL on Seymour Street in Marylebone and Zapote on Leonard Street, both at Google's ££££ and £££ tiers respectively; El Pastor's Soho, King's Cross and Battersea Power Station sites; Santo Remedio's Marylebone cantina; Mezcalito in Chelsea, whose listing claims one of Europe's largest tequila and mezcal collections; Club Mexicana in Brixton Market; Taqueria on Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill; Los Gordos at Seven Dials Market; and Tigre Tacos on Stoke Newington High Street.

In other words, a ratings-only list of Mexican London omits several of the restaurants the city is best known for. What the unrated 93 do carry is type, price tier, published hours and a written description — which is why we classify them a different way. By type, London's 117 break down as 58 general Mexican, 26 taquerías, 15 Tex-Mex, 5 cantinas, 3 fusion and 10 other. By Google's price tier: 27 at £, 68 at ££, 11 at £££ and one at ££££.

Those cuts are the subject of their own guides — the taquerías, the cantinas, the Tex-Mex rooms and the £ tier — and between them they cover the parts of London this page cannot.

Why the gap exists, as far as we can tell

The 24 rated and the 93 unrated look like two different populations in our data, because they were recorded at different times and from different sources. The rated group carries Google ratings and review counts and little else; the unrated group carries hand-written descriptions, a type and a price tier but no score. Nationally the split is the same: of 381 UK venues, 167 have a rating and 214 do not, and every single taquería, cantina and Tex-Mex listing in the UK is in the unrated group.

We would rather publish that than paper over it. It means any "best rated in the UK" list is drawn from 44 per cent of the directory, and it means the venues with the richest descriptions are precisely the ones with no stars. The honest version of this page is the two halves together.

What we are not saying

These are not our ratings and this is not our ranking. We map London's Mexican venues; we do not review them. Every star and review count above comes from Google's public listing. We have not eaten at these restaurants, and "highest rated according to Google" is a claim about Google's reviewers, not about the food.

Use it as a shortlist. Read the recent reviews yourself, check the hours — several London venues close on Sunday, which we cover in the Sunday guide — and book the small ones. The full listing with addresses and phone numbers is at our UK restaurant directory.
