Homemade Crunchwrap Supreme
Homemade Crunchwrap Supreme: the iconic hexagonal wrap made at home.
About this recipe
Homemade version of the iconic Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme: giant flour tortilla folded over Tex-Mex beef mince, melted nacho cheese sauce, crispy tostada, soured cream, lettuce, tomato and cheddar cheese. The perfect bite of modern Tex-Mex fusion.
History & Origin
The Crunchwrap Supreme is one of the most ingenious culinary creations of American fast food culture, introduced by Taco Bell in 2005 and quickly becoming one of the chain's best-selling products worldwide. Its concept is as simple as it is brilliant: layers of ingredients with different temperatures and textures, all wrapped in a giant flour tortilla folded into a hexagonal shape and griddled to create a golden, crispy exterior surface. What makes the Crunchwrap unique is the deliberate combination of a crispy element inside (a round tostada or a piece of toasted corn tortilla) surrounded by moist ingredients like cheese sauce and soured cream, themselves wrapped in the outer flour tortilla layer. This culinary engineering ensures that every bite contains all textures and flavours simultaneously, without crispy elements going soft or moist ones escaping. Although the Crunchwrap is a purely American fast food chain invention, the homemade recipe that emerged on social media, especially TikTok where the hashtag has accumulated hundreds of millions of views, uses higher quality ingredients like naturally spiced mince, homemade cheese sauce and fresh vegetables. The homemade version has elevated this fast food bite to the category of artisan recipe, proving that the simplest ideas are sometimes the most powerful.

Method
- 1
Season the beef mince with taco seasoning, cumin, chilli powder, salt and a little water. Cook in a frying pan over medium heat for 10 minutes. Keep warm.
- 2
Prepare the nacho cheese sauce: melt Velveeta or cheddar with a little milk and tinned green chillies over very low heat. Keep warm.
- 3
Place a large flour tortilla (30 cm) on a flat surface. In the centre place the beef mince, pour the hot cheese sauce over, then place a round crispy corn tostada on top.
- 4
Over the crispy tostada place soured cream, shredded lettuce, diced tomato and grated cheddar cheese.
- 5
Fold the edges of the tortilla towards the centre forming the characteristic hexagon, making sure it is well sealed in the middle.
- 6
Cook the crunchwrap seam-side down in a hot frying pan with a little oil for 2-3 minutes per side until golden. Serve immediately.
