Mango agua fresca with chilli and lime, tropical and spicy.
About this recipe
Mango agua fresca with a touch of chilli powder and lime. A sweet, tangy and spicy tropical Mexican drink.
History & Origin
Mango water is one of Mexico's most popular aguas frescas, especially during hot months when mangoes peak in sweetness. Although mango arrived from Southeast Asia via the Manila Galleon in the 16th century, it thrived on Mexico's tropical coasts. The manila variety became the favourite for aguas frescas. What makes mango water truly Mexican is adding chilli powder and lime, that sweet-sour-spicy combination defining the Mexican palate.

Method
- 1
Peel the mangoes and cut the flesh into pieces. Blend with a glass of water until you have a smooth puree.

💡 Manila mangoes are best for their intense sweetness.
- 2
Pour into a jug with the remaining cold water, lime juice and sugar. Mix well.

- 3
Serve with ice and sprinkle a little Tajin chilli powder on each glass when serving.

💡 The chilli powder is optional but very Mexican.
