History & Origin
The ritual of the caballito de tequila with sangrita is a Jalisco tradition dating from the early twentieth century. The term "caballito" refers to the small elongated glass. Sangrita was born in Chapala, Jalisco. The original sangrita was simply bitter orange juice with salt and powdered chile de arbol. The true tequila connoisseur never knocks it back as a shot but alternates leisurely sips of tequila with sangrita.

Prepare the sangrita: mix fresh orange juice, tomato juice, lime juice, hot sauce, salt and chilli powder.

💡 Authentic Jalisco sangrita does not include tomato juice.

Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Pour blanco or reposado tequila into caballitos. Serve at room temperature.

💡 Use 100% agave tequila for the best experience.

Pour sangrita into identical glasses alongside each tequila caballito.

Alternate small sips of tequila with sips of sangrita. Do not mix them.

💡 Some add a third caballito of pure lime juice to make "la bandera".
